GRANT PROGRAM UPDATE – July 2025
At the Jason Becker Creative Care Project we are elated! In our first two years of operations we have been able to give grants of $5000 to six people with ALS who are struggling to stay cared for at home with slim resources. Because of our generous donors they will be able to have a few more weeks of at home care, or an accessible bathroom, or have their accessible vehicle repaired …. Many small miracles. Although the grants are not big, the morale boost reportedly is huge. Often, people in this situation feel they are struggling alone without anyone to appeal to for help – in spite of the walk-a-thons and ice bucket challenges going on for their benefit.
The JBCCP wants to bridge the care gap that gives rise to hopelessness and giving up. We are happy we’ve made progress in that direction, but absolutely heartbroken knowing how far there is to go and how quickly $5000 disappears in the face of the 24/7 need for care.
We are a small and completely volunteer organization with rock bottom overhead. Nearly every penny of what comes in from donors goes quickly out to our recipients who need it. Apart from insurance and a few postage stamps we have almost no expenses. We love our “farm to table” approach (as our secretary terms it) and it is working great on a small scale. Help us scale this miracle up and give people with ALS and their families and caregivers more of a reason to keep fighting for breath. Your donations are 100% tax deductible and nearly 100% goes to people living in the ALS trenches, where they wait for a cure and can be gradually crushed by the weight of their care needs. If we can’t give the cure, let’s at least reduce that weight.
Here’s what some of our grant recipients from across the US have to say:
“I’m still processing this news and a bit floored because it comes at a time we really, really need it..…. I think people are afraid to be vulnerable about the tactical support they need because they’re afraid they’ll lose social support too, and have seen other people lose it.” – E.L., New York
“Your generosity, compassion, and dedication have not only lightened the burden of my disease but have also provided solace and strength to those who care for me. In moments of struggle, it is individuals like you who remind us that we are not alone in this journey. Your kindness has been a beacon of hope, transforming what could feel insurmountable into something bearable, even manageable. It is through your selflessness that we find the courage to face each day with resilience and gratitude. Thank you for being the pillars of support that make this path less daunting. Your contributions have left an indelible mark on our lives. Together, you have shown us that even in the face of adversity, humanity’s capacity for empathy and generosity shines brightly.” – JP, Tennessee
“The Grant money will go towards caring for my wife. This helps us out primarily to allow both of us some respite time. As you know caring for another’s 100% daily needs takes a huge toll on us physically and emotionally. If it was not for our access to professional care, I don’t think I could have made it this far. Kathy needs a break from me as much as I do from the daily/nightly grind. This disease has been the hardest test for us, including family and friends. Nothing can prepare you for such a devastating journey.” – MM, California
“Wow I am overwhelmed with gratitude and my family are as well. This money will be used towards an accessible bathroom and for caregivers’ pay.” – MM, Texas
